Po­lice are try­ing to iden­ti­fy a man whose de­com­pos­ing body was found float­ing in the St Joseph Riv­er yes­ter­day, as in­ves­ti­ga­tors work to de­ter­mine how he died.

Re­ports in­di­cate that an em­ploy­ee of Nestlé Trinidad Ltd spot­ted the body in the wa­ter around noon and alert­ed the po­lice. The corpse was re­trieved from the riv­er, but pre­lim­i­nary in­ves­ti­ga­tions found no iden­ti­fi­able tat­toos or birth­marks that could as­sist in iden­ti­fy­ing the vic­tim.

Se­nior po­lice of­fi­cers said they were un­able to de­ter­mine how long the man had been in the wa­ter and that checks were un­der­way to es­tab­lish whether he matched the pro­file of any­one re­port­ed miss­ing.

Of­fi­cers were al­so un­able to say whether there were any vis­i­ble signs of vi­o­lence on the body and are await­ing the re­sults of a post-mortem ex­am­i­na­tion for fur­ther ev­i­dence.
