The teenager who died in the horrific crash at Manzanilla on Saturday afternoon has been identified as Alex Sookraj.
Police believe Sookraj lost control of his car when he attempted to overtake his brother’s car as they both headed west along the Manzanilla Mayaro Road shortly after 3.40 pm.
Police said Sookraj, 19, was driving his beige Lancer, registered PCC 2474, in company with Jacob Edwards, of Eastern Main Road, Manzanilla and Sherice Mc Phee, 21, of Oropouche Road, Sangre Grande, when the accident happened.
Edwards was sitting in front and Mc Phee at the back.
Police said upon reaching near to the Manzanilla Government Primary school, Sookraj attempted to overtake a silver Volkwagon Bora, registered PBK 5284, driven by his 21-year-old brother Shane Sookraj.
However, Sookraj’s Lancer came into contact with the door of his brother’s vehicle, causing Alex Sookraj to run off the road on the eastern side.
The car collided with a concrete wall. The car split into several parts upon impact and Sookraj died on the spot. Edwards suffered a broken leg while Mc Phee and Shane escaped with minor injuries.
A team of officers, including Actg Insp Ramlakhan, PCs Mohammed and Bellingy, of the Manzanilla Police Station, responded to the accident, along with FSSO Gopaul of the Mayaro Fire Station.
District Medical Officer Dr Prince viewed the body, which was removed to the Sangre Grande Hospital mortuary. An autopsy has been scheduled for today.
