Rad­hi­ca De Sil­va

The teenag­er who died in the hor­rif­ic crash at Man­zanil­la on Sat­ur­day af­ter­noon has been iden­ti­fied as Alex Sookraj.

Po­lice be­lieve Sookraj lost con­trol of his car when he at­tempt­ed to over­take his broth­er’s car as they both head­ed west along the Man­zanil­la Ma­yaro Road short­ly af­ter 3.40 pm.

Po­lice said Sookraj, 19, was dri­ving his beige Lancer, reg­is­tered PCC 2474, in com­pa­ny with Ja­cob Ed­wards, of East­ern Main Road, Man­zanil­la and Sherice Mc Phee, 21, of Oropouche Road, San­gre Grande, when the ac­ci­dent hap­pened. 

Ed­wards was sit­ting in front and Mc Phee at the back.

Po­lice said up­on reach­ing near to the Man­zanil­la Gov­ern­ment Pri­ma­ry school, Sookraj at­tempt­ed to over­take a sil­ver Volk­wag­on Bo­ra, reg­is­tered PBK 5284, dri­ven by his 21-year-old broth­er Shane Sookraj.

How­ev­er, Sookraj’s Lancer came in­to con­tact with the door of his broth­er’s ve­hi­cle, caus­ing Alex Sookraj to run off the road on the east­ern side.

The car col­lid­ed with a con­crete wall. The car split in­to sev­er­al parts up­on im­pact and Sookraj died on the spot. Ed­wards suf­fered a bro­ken leg while Mc Phee and Shane es­caped with mi­nor in­juries.

A team of of­fi­cers, in­clud­ing Actg In­sp Ram­lakhan, PCs Mo­hammed and Bellingy, of the Man­zanil­la Po­lice Sta­tion, re­spond­ed to the ac­ci­dent, along with FS­SO Gopaul of the Ma­yaro Fire Sta­tion.

Dis­trict Med­ical Of­fi­cer Dr Prince viewed the body, which was re­moved to the San­gre Grande Hos­pi­tal mor­tu­ary. An au­top­sy has been sched­uled for to­day.
