An aspiring mechanic was murdered in Carenage on Wednesday, following a drive-by shooting in the area.
Shaquille John, of Resurrection, Upper Haig Street, finished work and stopped off at a savannah in the area where some of his friends had gathered at around 9 pm.
It turned out to be a fatal choice.
A vehicle pulled up alongside and two gunmen opened fire on the group.
John, relatives said, had his back to the roadway while his friends scattered. The 20-year-old victim, and 27-year-old Kedelle Mark, also of Upper Haig Street were wounded during the gun attack.
John died at James Medical Complex where he and Mark had been taken. Mark was treated for a gunshot wound to the foot.
John’s mother, Stacy Ann John, told reporters at the Forensic Science Centre in Federation Park, that a week ago he had reconciled with his father who operated a garage. She said he had long expressed his dream to be a mechanic and having spent several years taking odd jobs with other garages, finally put his differences with his father aside and accepted a role in his father’s business.
She said she was happy to see him make that decision because it meant that he would be off the streets.
Relatives of John said they believed the attack was part of an ongoing turf war between gangs in Seaview Drive and Haig Street.
