Local Government minister Kazim Hosein on Wednesday ordered an investigation into suspected building approval corruption practice at Chaguanas Borough Corporation after receiving documents from councillor Vandana Mohit.
Hosein spoke about the matter in Tuesday's Standing Finance Committee deliberations on the 2019 Budget.
In those proceedings, UNC MP Ganga Singh had asked about the recent incident where someone shot at Mohit's home. She claimed the shooting was a reprisal for her questioning delays in the building approval process for certain burgesses in her electoral district.
Hosein said Mohit had written to him following the shooting - which police are currently probing- and he was going to respond to her "accordingly."
Hosein met with Mohit on Wednesday and she submitted documents alluding to alleged improper practices at the Chaguanas Borough Corporation's building department, Ministry officials confirmed.
The minister has handed over all documents to the Ministry's Permanent Secretary "for a thorough investigation into the matter, in the presence of the Assistant Commissioner of Municipal Police," the Ministry said in a statement.
"Every allegation of corruption is taken seriously by the Ministry and we are going to ensure that we resolve this. Councillor Mohit has come forward to bring attention to this matter and has not backed down despite her traumatic experience, which is currently being investigated by the TTPS."
"The Ministry can address this matter at an administrative level, and we will do the necessary to uncover the truth of these allegations, for the benefit of the people of the Borough, and all citizens."
Chaguanas Mayor Gopaul Boodan, supporting Mohit's allegations, said, "We're happy to hear of the Ministry's probe. We moved a resolution last month to have an investigation done into the Building Inspectorate Division and any assistance the Ministry needs from the corporation in its investigation of the matter will be made readily available - we would like to get to the bottom of it as soon as possible and as much as Ms Mohit does. She's a very dynamic councillor."
Guardian Media understands security is being provided for Mohit.
