The T&T Police Service is being accused of targeting national award recipient Terrance David, following an early morning raid at his Sea Lots, Port-of-Spain home yesterday.
David, 43, of Production Avenue, claimed officers deliberately abused their authority and damaged his property during the 30-minute search, which began around 4.30 am.
David, along with another Sea Lots resident, Deshawn Hamilton, was awarded the Hummingbird Medal Bronze during this year’s Republic Day National Awards Ceremony for an act of gallantry.
The two rescued a police officer from a burning wreck on September 5, 2024, after his vehicle crashed and burst into flames on the Beetham Highway, near Sea Lots.
Terrance and Hamilton were on their way to work and stopped to render assistance after their calls to the police for help went unanswered.
But yesterday, David admitted to feeling dejected after officers, some of whom were dressed in camouflage uniforms, entered his modest apartment, which is on the top floor of his mother’s house, without a warrant.
“They tell me they don’t need one as we under a SoE,” David said.
“I didn’t put up a fight or argue. I just let them in and watched them search everything... they turned up my house and the only thing I beg them not to do is interfere with my gypsum ceiling.”
He claimed officers even brought in a sniffer dog.
“They ain’t find nothing illegal by me. But when they was walking out, one man deliberately pulled the string for my TV and it fall and mash up,” he claimed.
“I kept asking the officers not to damage my property... I ain’t mind them looking for nothing cause they claim they acting on information, but they ain’t find nothing.”
He said the officers who searched his property were wearing body cameras, but he is uncertain if they recorded the entire exercise.
David said it was only his apartment that was searched.
He has called for answers on why he was singled out. He also wanted to know who will replace his 40-inch flat-screen television, which he said he purchased for approximately $2,000 several years ago.
“The officer did it for spite... and it hurting me cause I work hard to buy my things. I not working right now and I does be inside watching my TV. How am I supposed to function now?”
The TTPS was contacted on the matter but a response was not received up to yesterday evening.
