The North Central Regional Health Authority (NCRHA) says it has successfully completed major electrical upgrade works at the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex (EWMSC).
The project involved installing a new transformer on the facility’s electrical grid to operate alongside the existing one, a move the NCRHA said would reduce risks of power failure or electrical loss that could leave the hospital vulnerable.
To maintain patient safety and minimise disruptions, the authority developed contingency plans, rescheduled outpatient clinics and elective surgeries, and diverted radiology services such as CT scans, X-rays, MRIs, and ultrasounds to the Arima General Hospital and Mt Hope Women’s Hospital.
According to the NCRHA, the works were completed without any operational interruptions for patients.
Chairman Dr Tim Gopeesingh thanked the multidisciplinary team involved, saying, “Our staff went above and beyond to get this done, and we are grateful for their effort, expertise and dedication. This project is a testament to our commitment as an RHA to building capacity and ensuring safe, high-quality service for our patients.”
The authority said the upgrade forms part of a series of planned improvements aimed at strengthening hospital infrastructure and enhancing patient care.
