“I want to make more!” Those were the words of centenarian Nathaniel Beharry as he celebrated his 100th birthday on August 28. “I don’t know how long, that man up dey have to tell me,” he continued pointing above. Fondly called “Dastan”, the Grenadian native's children hosted a 100th birthday celebration at his Tamana home.
Sophia Kennedy, Inspector I of the Division of Ageing joined the celebration asking him what is the best advice he has for this generation to live a long and healthy life. In his response, he said “children ought to always do good.”
“Breathing fresh air and drinking lots of water” are keys which Beharry attributes to his longevity.
Beharry indicated that he worked as a Sawyer and recalled planting nutmeg trees with his father on their land and that his passion for agriculture continued when he migrated to Trinidad in 1958. “I worked on an estate and I cultivate the estate for the owner. It didn’t have a fig tree, it didn’t have a cocoa tree and I came and I worked for the owner and I cultivate the land,” said Beharry.
The father of five, grandfather to 10, and great-grandfather of three also indicated that he met his wife Theodora in Tamana. They got married in 1963 and lived together for 55 years until she passed away in 2018. He further added that the most important lesson he has learned is to work hard for what you need and what you want, adding that he currently spends his time relaxing, listening to music, watching television, and doing small exercises.
