The Chaguanas Borough Corporation (CBC) has undertaken an ambitious programme that would benefit over 100 entrepreneurs.

In an exclusive with Guardian Media, Mayor Vandana Mohit said she plans to re-purpose underutilised facilities controlled by the CBC to ensure burgesses reek the maximum benefits.

Mohit said the council of the CBC has decided to convert the carpark at the underutilised Cunupia Market at King Sultan Avenue into a mobile food court.

Mohit said over 100 spaces at the facility would be prepared so vendors can have an active food court on evenings from 5 pm daily.

She said the area is located next to the police station and has a high flow of traffic along the Southern Main Road that connects Chaguanas and several communities straight to Curepe.

Mohit said vendors would be allowed to set up shop and offer the public a wide range of fast foods.

Mohit said the idea stemmed from her walkabouts on the campaign trail last year when she was approached by a large number of single mothers and unemployed women who were seeking jobs.

Mohit said while the borough was strapped for cash and was in no position to hire anyone that did not stop her from finding alternate solutions.

Mohit said she looked at ways of opening up entrepreneurship avenues for the burgesses and the goal was to ensure that persons get off the ground and earn a sustainable income with the future prospect of employing others.

The mayor urged interested persons to get their food badges and register for spots at the Chaguanas Borough Corporation.

She expects to open this facility before the end of the first quarter.
