The man accused of beating a Venezuelan woman with a wheel spanner and then shared a video recording of the woman in pain was again denied bail when he reappeared in court on Monday.
Avalon Callender has been in custody for more than a week on charges of kidnapping and wounding a Venezuelan woman.
Callender, 31, according to his criminal record, has matters pending for false imprisonment, assault and sexual assault. However, Callender claimed those matters were dismissed.
When the case was called via video conference before San Fernando Magistrate Kerianne Byer on Monday, his attorney Shaun Teekasingh said Callender’s family had not yet provided the court extracts to support his client’s claims.
He asked the magistrate to adjourn the matter to allow his client to produce the extracts.
Callender was arrested the day after a video went viral on social media of a Venezuelan woman being beaten and threatened.
The 19-year-old woman who escaped her attacker went to the San Fernando General Hospital where she was treated and subsequently discharged. The charges alleged that on October 30, he kidnapped the woman who was allegedly in a relationship with him, along the S.S. Erin Road and took her to a house where she was assaulted. Callender was subsequently arrested during a police anti-crime exercise by the Special Operations Response Team and San Fernando CID after Police Commissioner Gary Griffith saw the video.
Callender was charged by PC Nicholas Gervais. When he first appeared in court, the police wanted an opportunity to have him traced. On his second appearance, he was not brought down from prison and the third time the matter was called the magistrate was not present.
Callender is expected to make his fifth appearance in court on November 29.
