Bail was denied to a 42-year-old man charged with sacrilege following an incident at a church in La Lune, Moruga.
The matter was heard at the San Fernando Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, October 1, where the accused was not called upon to plead. The matter was adjourned to March 23, 2027, for a status hearing.
In a statement issued yesterday, the TTPS said that around 10.30 pm on Sunday, September 27, police received information that someone had entered the La Lune Seventh-day Adventist Church, located at La Lune Road, Moruga.
Several items belonging to the church, valued at approximately $4,386.00, were discovered on the compound.
The items included an industrial fan, four sets of curtains, 35 communion glasses, a case of bottled water, an electric guitar and decorative flowers.
The accused was subsequently arrested and charged with sacrilege following enquiries.
The investigation was conducted under the guidance of Senior Superintendent Hospedales, Superintendent Bertie, Woman Superintendent Bridglal, Assistant Superintendent Chulhan and Inspector Charles, and under the direct supervision of Acting Corporal Roopnarine.
In recent times churches and other places of worship been targeted in Trinidad and Tobago.
In July 2025, three men were charged with sacrilege after a break-in at the Christian Prayer Centre in Freeport, where air-conditioning units, doors and a table valued at about $44,775.00 were stolen.
In December 2024, two men were sentenced in separate sacrilege cases involving a Hindu temple in Debe and a Baptist church in Fyzabad. In that ruling, Justice Lisa Ramsumair-Hinds noted that 161 reports of sacrilege had been recorded over the preceding five years, resulting in 47 arrests.
In June 2026, two monstrances worth about $15,000 were stolen from St Mary’s RC Church in St James before being returned with an apology note, while in July 2026 Our Lady of Perpetual Help RC Church in San Fernando was broken into.
