A plan by Lord Superior’s family to host his funeral at the National Academy for the Performing Arts has been dashed after the request for the facility was declined by the Community Development, Culture and the Arts.
Dr Andrew Marcano, better known of Lord Superior, died in New York on November 25. The Rio Claro-born calypso legend was 79.
Since then his family had been in talks with the ministry in the hope of having his memorial ceremony at NAPA.
On Wednesday, a notice was sent from the family that the event would indeed take place at NAPA but later in the day the T&T Guardian was informed that the late calypsonian's funeral will take place at his Diego Martin home after the ministry rescinded permission to use NAPA.
Contacted on the issue, Minister of Community Development, Culture and the Arts Nyan Gadsby-Dolly confirmed the family's request to use NAPA was declined but denied permission was ever granted for the facility to be used for the funeral.
In a Whatsapp message on Wednesday evening, Gadsby-Dolly told the T&T Guardian, "Permission to use NAPA for the funeral was not granted, therefore the issue of rescission does not arise. Use of the Savannah was offered but the family declined."
Other activities planned for Lord Superior's remembrance are set to continue as planned.
A public viewing of his body is set to take place at Belgroves Funeral Home & Skiffle Pan Yard in San Fernando from 6 to 9 pm today. He is to be buried in his hometown of Rio Claro at 4 pm tomorrow.
