The $12 million bail granted to Krystiana Sankar and Yannis “Pebbles” Augustine is proving to be too high for their families to post.
Attorney Larry Williams, who represents Sankar, confirmed that his client was yet to post bail, and in his view was unlikely to do so before the end of Tuesday, while Criston J Williams, the attorney for Augustine was not confident bail would be posted any time soon.
Guardian Media was told that a major hurdle was the fact that the magistrate imposed one deed stipulation for the potential bailor, meaning that the property to secure the bail must be in excess of the $6m value.
Neither family has been able to provide such up to midday on Tuesday.
Williams said he was hoping to file an application to seek an adjustment on the bail figure or the conditions to meet the $6 million requirements. However, that applications are not likely to be submitted or considered until Wednesday.
Sankar, of Blue Range, Diego Martin, and Augustine, a lifeguard and swim coach from St Lucien Road, Diego Martin, will, therefore, remain behind bars until then.
They were jointly charged with possession of marijuana and cocaine for the purpose of trafficking alongside Aruba Eligon and Jervon “Chile” Cole after they arrested following a raid at Apartment 1, Regent Gardens, Westmoorings last Tuesday.
An estimated $3.8 million worth of drugs were seized in the raid; $3.4 million worth of marijuana and one kilo of cocaine worth $400,000.
Sankar was also charged with possession of a loaded .38 revolver.
In Monday’s sitting before Magistrate Aden Stroude sitting in the Port-of-Spain 4A Magistrates Court, Eligon was denied bail outright, as he had two drug offences in 2011 and 2017 while Cole was denied bail as they could not confirm that he lived at the two addresses he submitted to the court.
Cole then gave a third address and may be granted bail once the court verifies his proper residence.
The court will reconsider his bail application next Monday.
