A Guard and Emergency Branch constable remains in a stable condition in hospital after being stabbed in the face by a drunken bar patron on Saturday.
Witnesses said Sterling Martin, also known as Flowers, was trying to quell a potentially violent situation when his attacker stabbed him with a broken glass bottle.
A report stated that around 3.30 pm, Martin, of Siparia, was off-duty and was liming at the Busy Corner Bar along Coora Road, Siparia.
The suspect, who entered the bar holding a beer bottle in his hand, began harassing fellow patrons and was cursing loudly.
Martin walked over and spoke to the suspect. When he began to act violently, Martin attempted to arrest him.
However, the suspect pulled away, broke the bottle on a gate at the front of the bar and stabbed Martin on the left side of his face.
With Martin bleeding from the 10 cm wide gash, other patrons pounced on the suspect and subdued him.
He was arrested by Siparia Police and he remained in custody up to late yesterday.
Martin was taken to the Siparia District Health Facility where he was treated. He was later transferred to the San Fernando General Hospital where he underwent emergency surgery. Investigators said he is expected to make a full recovery.
