It's been a month since the four divers perished inside a 30-inch diameter pipeline at Paria's Berth No. 6 yet the lone survivor Christopher Boodram remains haunted, unable to sleep and eat properly.
His friend Michelle Hosein, who set up a Gofundme account on March 15, to help pay for Boodram's expenses, explained his predicament in a Facebook video.
Both Boodram and Hosein attend the New Testament Church of God.
She said:" We decided to open a Gofundme to assist Christopher in his hour of need. The fact that Christopher survived this horrible disaster is a miracle. He called on Jesus and prayed while he was in that pipeline. He is a living testimony."
Hosein explained that Boodram's three children were only now realizing that their father could have died, adding that they too needed counselling.
" It is unlikely that Christopher will be able to return to diving in the near term as he needs urgent psychological support. He is unable to sleep and eat well. He cannot forget the nightmare. The psychological impact is so great that he requires additional psychological assistance to what he is receiving now," she explained.
Hosein added, "In addition to medical expenses and care, Christopher has unknown legal expenses."
She said Boodram is seeking independent, internationally accredited experts and Health and Safety professionals to testify on his behalf.
" This is separate from the participation and stresses of the Commission of Enquiry. Since Christopher gave his personal account, numerous members of the public and even people abroad want to assist," Hosein said, explaining this is why a Gofundme account was established.
" It is with fervent help and care that compassionate people now have an opportunity to help Christopher and Candy. We want to support Christopher and God will give him the victory in Jesus's name," Hosein added.
Up to midday on Friday, the Gofundme had only received $17, 611, which represented three per cent of the $700,000 needed for expenses.
Boodram has spoken out only once his the ordeal and has blamed Paria Fuel Trading company for the deaths of his friends. He said criminal charges should be proffered against the company which declared his colleagues dead, and the Coast Guard, which prevented rescue efforts.
Hosein and his fellow divers Fyzal Kurban, Rishi Nagassar, Kazim Ali Jr and Yusuf Henry were doing underwater maintenance on a 30-inch diameter pipeline at No 36 sealine riser on the Berth 6 offshore platform at Pointe-a-Pierre around 2:45 pm on February 25, when they were sucked into the pipeline.
Boodram said they had just removed the expansion plug when the suction occurred. Since the incident, calls have been made to regularize the diving industry. The Occupational Safety and Health Agency has been criticized for not issuing immediate prohibition notices.
The Bureau of Standards has also been criticized for not completing consultation on voluntary diving standards. Several diving companies have been accused of exploiting divers by not properly equipping them and using scuba divers for commercial diving projects. The Oilfield Workers Trade Union, the Movement for Social Justice and the Progressive Empowerment Party led by Phillip Edward Alexander have all called for justice, holding candlelight vigils across several parts of the country. Calls were made and a petition was signed for Paria executives to step down but this never happened.
A Commission of Enquiry is now being arranged and the OSHA and the police are continuing separate investigations.
