As hundreds of drivers faced an early morning gridlock driving into Port-of-Spain, after a woman was fatally struck crossing the highway in El Socorro on Monday morning, the Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation said it is temporarily opening of the Priority Bus Route (PBR) to light motor vehicles today from Macoya to Port of Spain in the westbound direction only.
The ministry stated that the route will be opened from 8:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.
The ministry said the temporary measure applies only to light motor vehicles travelling westbound along the PBR between Macoya and Port of Spain.
Motorists were advised to obey traffic regulations and follow instructions from law enforcement officers and traffic personnel during the period of the opening.
The ministry also urged drivers to exercise caution while using the route.
The PBR is usually reserved for authorised vehicles, including public transport vehicles and emergency services, during specified hours. Temporary openings are sometimes implemented to reduce traffic congestion along the East-West Corridor.
The ministry did not state the reason for Monday’s temporary opening but thanked members of the public for their cooperation and understanding.
Drivers travelling along the corridor were advised to plan their journeys accordingly and comply with directions from officers stationed along the route.
The ministry said traffic personnel and law enforcement officers will monitor the flow of vehicles during the exercise.
The temporary arrangement ends at 11:00 a.m., after which normal restrictions governing the use of the Priority Bus Route will resume.
