The Progressive Democratic Patriots (PDP), the political party led by Watson Duke, will not comment on Duke being taken for questioning by police on Monday.
Duke, who is also President of the Public Services Association, is the Tobago House of the Assembly (THA) Minority Leader.
At the PDP's weekly press briefing held on Tuesday at the Minority Council's, Main Street, Scarborough headquarters, Assemblyman Farley Augustine said that because the matter is ongoing, the party will reserve its comment.
Augustine, who won the Parlatuvier/L'Anse Fourmi/Speyside seat on a PDP ballot, said the party will issue a statement as soon as "the matter is clearer."
"At this juncture, given that it is an active police investigation, we will wish to have his lawyer (SC Gilbert Peterson) deal with the issue...as opposed to from us. But we feel it absolutely necessary for Tobagonians to know that their leader is being questioned for his mouth," Farley said.
He said the party had been in touch with persons close to Duke, as Duke remains detained by police.
"Reports are coming in that he was held for questioning on a statement he would have made some time ago...a matter of sedition," Farley added.
He said if that is the case then the party will issue a "strongly-worded statement" on the matter.
"For democracy to work well, freedom of speech must be sacrosanct, once one is not libelous or scandalous," Farley said.
