There were harsh reactions yesterday from people in San Fernando to Minister of Finance Colm Imbert’s announcement during the Budget presentation that fuel prices would be increased with immediate effect. Many feared the hike in fuel will cause a ripple effect and lead to price increases for numerous goods and services.

That’s too ridiculous, we was not expecting it. Only this evening we were talking about that, a friend and I, and we know they have to debate it. I was not expecting it so quickly. We knew it was coming but not this fast. My God that is terrible. With the increase in gas prices, everything is going to go up.
Brandon Lewis
Madness, level madness, nothing but madness. This Government is idiot. They doing s#@t and more s#@t, right through, so just now we can’t buy car again, we will have to walk and travel and ride bike.
Gloria Peters, retiree, San Fernando
With the gas increase, everything else will go up because transportation for items to different groceries, or whatever. All the taxi fares, everything is going to go up. I don’t know how people are going to survive. Those who have jobs will manage but what about those who are unemployed? Crime might increase, people want things and they don’t have jobs or money so they will do some stealing.
Elvin Batholemew, taxi driver
I think (this will affect me) real bad, problems. The taxi drivers might have to raise their prices again so it is kind of hard on the poor man. Something have to happen because we under real, real pressure right now. People will start to cry because the price (taxi fare) will be too much, and then wear and tear for vehicles and stuff like that.
Sayad Mohammed, businessman, Couva
It is ridiculous to be paying these sort of prices in this economy with the salaries that people are getting, is too much. We need to take a stand, this country need to rally, we are the people of the country and the prices are too much for us.
Rainire Remy
We have to abide by it, we have to do what we have to do. It hard all over the place. Gas prices did not raise here alone, it raise all over the world.
Dwayne Kanhai, businessman, Marabella
I have two vehicles on the road and I do sales and what happen it (fuel price increase) going to raise the price of the products that I (sell) wholesale to groceries. So gas alone going up will affect not only taxi people, that affecting everybody because it really hard on the citizens of this country right now for the poor and also the rich will end up poor because of this situation. So everybody will end up to be in one whole disaster right now in this country and it really sad.
