A plainclothes police officer helped foil a robbery at the One Plus One supermarket in Cunupia Tuesday night.
Police said the officer had just made a purchase at the supermarket, located along Munroe Road, when three men - one with armed a gun and the other two with cutlasses – stormed the supermarket around 8.40 pm.
The officer was about to enter his car but before he could get there he was ordered to lie on the ground by the bandits, who announced a hold-up. The officer quickly hid his firearm under the car and as the bandits entered the grocery he pulled it out and called for back-up.
A team of officers responded within minutes and together with the plainclothes officer attempted to enter the establishment in a bid to foil the robbery in progress.
On seeing the officers, the gunman opened fire on them and he and his colleagues attempted to escape. The officers returned fire and one of the bandits was shot but still managed to escape.
The other two ran upstairs the building but were later cornered and arrested.
Police later received information that the wounded suspect is currently at the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex in Mt Hope seeking medical attention. A team of police officers are on their way there.
Senior officers, including Snr Supt Inraj Balram, are currently on the scene as it is being processed.
Owners of the supermarket said bandits also attempted to rob them yesterday but were foiled. However, they were unsure if the three tonight were the same men.
