Although Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar has praised law enforcement’s efforts to reduce serious crimes, she says more work is needed to bring the figures down further.
In a social media post yesterday, the Prime Minister said: “The data clearly shows a safer T&T in 2026 with a nationwide decrease in serious crimes.
“Data shows that serious crimes across all police divisions in Trinidad and Tobago decreased from 6,469 incidents during the January to July 20, 2025 period to 5,514 incidents during the same period in 2026.”
She said this represented a decrease of 955 incidents or 15 per cent across the country.
The largest reduction was recorded in the Northern Division at 32 per cent, followed by the North Eastern Division with a 30 per cent decrease. The Eastern and Central Divisions each recorded a 22 per cent decrease.
According to Persad-Bissessar, “The 2026 total is also 1,217 incidents less than the 2024 total for the January to July period.”
She claimed the data on serious crime declines, combined with figures showing there had been approximately 400 fewer murders than projected from 2025 to July 2026, “clearly shows that the TTPS and Government are making steady progress with anti-crime efforts during the SoE.”
Persad-Bissessar also encouraged citizens to support the protective services who are working diligently across the country.
In a similar social media post dated July 21, Persad-Bissessar highlighted that there were 118 fewer murders compared to the same period in 2024.
She said this represented a decline from 331 murders in 2024 to 213 over the same period in 2026.
“The statistical data show that both the Government and the TTPS are making positive progress under the SoE for the benefit of our citizens,” she said.
