Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley has condemned what he says is support by trade unions and the Opposition for the escalating protests by scrap iron workers, who are agitating over Government’s decision to ban scrap metals exports for six months.
Scrap iron workers blocked the northbound carriageway of the Sir Solomon Hochoy Highway, this morning, triggering a massive traffic gridlock. Traffic was backed up all the way from Claxton Bay to Corinth Flyover to Golconda and beyond for several hours today, Monday 29 August 2022.
The Prime Minister released the following brief statement on the matter via his Facebook page, this morning:
“So they have made their move. Dump truckloads of sand and debris on both sides of the highway and block traffic! What a wonderful idea of leadership from Roget and the followers including the UNC! The marauding gangs of metal thieves threatened to, but did not complete the job of shutting down the country, so the leaders are helping them to get that done.”

Several persons responded to Dr Rowley’s comments, agreeing with his condemnation of those believed to be aiding and abetting the scrap iron workers in their increasingly disruptive protests.
“All leaders should condemn the dumping of loads of dirt/sand on the highway. Those who don't are part of this disgrace,” was one response to the PM’s Facebook post.
Another response echoed similar sentiments: “Wrong move by the unions, expected nothing better from the opposition… this is not one to support.”
Another person asked: “National security should be all over this. They cannot hold the country to ransom because their "industry" was shut down. Why aren't there massive arrests?”

While another questioned why the debris had been left on the highway for so many hours:
“Why is it that since 3:15 this morning most of social media people knew about the blockage on the highway and yet at 9:00 authorities still have not cleared same? Happy 60th Independence.”
One person observed how dangerous the blockages could have been, given that the dirt and mud were dumped in the wee hours of Monday morning:
“This could have been so dangerous to drivers on the road. Someone could have died. The unions should condemn these actions. Bring in tougher laws. Imagine going to the airport; you would surely miss your flight. Harsher penalties needed.”
A couple parents pointed to the chaos that could ensue should the protests continue into the new school term:
“My Prime Minster. I implore you to take decisive action against this industry! they cannot be allowed to hold the country to ransom, Also send the army out … children are starting school next week they must be dealt with!”
“It is a pity that they see this as their best option in terms of action. It is hoped that they do not seek to put such pressure on parents and students as the new school year starts next week! Please let better sense prevail!”
