Opposition Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar has labelled the PNM's media briefing yesterday as "nothing short of farcical."

Following the PNM General Council meeting on Saturday, Minister of Energy and Minister in the Office of the Prime Minister Stuart Young and Minister of Youth Development and National Service, Foster Cummings, confirmed that Young had the support of all 21 Members of Parliament to succeed Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley.

Reacting to the development, Persad-Bissessar said the conference was "a vulgar and obscene charade aimed at hoodwinking a desperate, traumatized nation into believing that unity was achieved among the lazy, greedy, incompetent warring members of the Rowley Government, even as they remained engaged in their cloak-and-dagger politics."

She added that this was just part of the "PNM’s ongoing, chaotic soap opera of a leadership battle."

The Opposition Leader said the country is "rudderless and on dangerous autopilot" while the Prime Minister attempts to get his ministers in line to overcome the internal power struggles within the PNM.

"The reality is that Rowley’s naked attempt to play musical chairs with his entire bunch of incompetent Ministers cannot and will never benefit the people of Trinidad and Tobago, now or in the future. His insistence on presiding over Young's coronation is a dagger to the heart of our country’s democracy."

Persad-Bissessar stated that with the current contention within the PNM, all other matters of importance have been pushed aside.

"Notably, this past week, the current State of Emergency, the unprecedented, brutal, runaway crime and murder wave, and ongoing economic hardships for citizens have taken a back seat, as all PNM MPs and Ministers have gone into self-preservation mode, following Rowley’s selfish decision to abandon his government’s desperately sinking ship."

She emphasised that regardless of who the Prime Minister chose, they would not be fit for the role.

"Rowley’s ongoing imposition of Young, or ANYONE ELSE, as his replacement is therefore useless since this will not fix the runaway crime situation, create jobs, or bring the cost of living down."

She added that only the "UNC Government can rescue and restore security, prosperity, peace, and progress to Trinidad and Tobago."

She reiterated that she stands ready with her party to stabilise T&T.
