Three men were shot dead after police intercepted them after they commandeered a van loaded with over $80,000 in cigarettes along Todd's Road, in Central Trinidad.
At 10 am on Friday, two men held up a sales man at Papa James Cafe, Todds Road. During the robbery the men disarmed the security guard of the cafe before escaping with his gun and a van loaded with cigarettes.
The van was later found at abandoned near La Gloria Road.
Police searching for the men cornered them at a house on Fitt Trace, off Todd's Station Road.
Investigators said there was a shoot-out during the confrontation and three men were fatally shot.
A fourth suspect was unhurt and taken into custody.
One of the dead men identified was Kadeem Welch.
Welch, 22, had 42 outstanding warrants, and had been to court previously for shooting at police officers.
He died 10 days short of his 23rd birthday.
