Police shot and apprehended a suspect allegedly linked to an attempted murder and several firearm-related offences during an intelligence-led operation in Pleasantville on Tuesday.
According to police, around 4.05 pm, Southern Division officers went to Balisier Avenue after receiving credible information that a man described as a “priority offender” was at his residence and armed with illegal firearms.
Officers approached the house from three directions, but when they announced their presence, the suspect ran to the back of the house and attempted to escape along a drain.
Police claimed he was holding a silver object resembling a firearm, while another black object resembling a pistol grip was protruding from his pants pocket.
One of the officers shouted, but the suspect raised the firearm towards him, resulting in the officer firing at him. The suspect then fled south along the drain, where he encountered another group of officers.
When the officers called on him to stop, he climbed over a dilapidated chain-link fence into a neighbouring yard and continued running towards the front of the property.
The suspect encountered another officer who ordered him to drop his gun, but he allegedly refused and was shot in the left side of his back.
He dropped the firearm and was detained.
Officers recovered a Smith & Wesson revolver, a magazine and nine 9mm rounds.
The suspect was taken to the San Fernando General Hospital, where he was treated and then discharged. He was then taken into police custody.
The operation was conducted under the supervision of Ag Sgt Seecharan and included officers of the Ste Madeleine Police Station, San Fernando Operations and Enquiries Unit, and the Southern Division Road Enforcement Task Force.
