A Mayaro man was killed by police during an alleged confrontation on Monday at the Guayaguayare Fishing Port, after he reportedly pointed a gun at officers.
Police identified the man as Ainsley Glenn Gonzales, of Calmapas Village, Guayaguayare Village, Mayaro.
Officers reportedly went to the Guayaguayare Fishing Port around 2 am and saw Gonzales standing outside.
Police said upon seeing the officers, Gonzales turned and ran into a wooden structure on the premises.
Officers said Gonzales was sitting on a bed and pointed a gun at them, following which several clicking sounds were heard.
Police said Gonzales ignored several verbal instructions from officers for him to put down the gun, and in keeping with the TTPS Use of Force Policy, officers fired several rounds at Gonzales, hitting him about the body.
Gonzales collapsed and was taken quickly to the Mayaro Health Facility, where he was pronounced dead at 2.38 am.
Police said a sawed off shotgun was recovered at the scene.
