Opposition Senator Lyndira Oudit said Opposition Leader Basdeo Panday has compromised her safety and security by exposing her home address and telephone number during a political meeting which was carried live on radio and the Internet on Tuesday night. During a political meeting at Felicity Presbyterian School Panday read the full contents of a letter written by Oudit, which supported his candidacy for political leader in the January 24 internal elections of the United National Congress (UNC) and stated her desire to be on his slate.
The letter contained her home address and cellphone number. Yesterday, Oudit said that was a most irresponsible act. She said: "I am deeply concerned with the lack of respect for my safety and security from a leader who goes around telling people he would ensure the safety of their daughters and mothers and sisters and brothers. I am a mother, I am a daughter." Oudit said his personal attacks on individuals did not augur well for him nor the party. "He reduces his legacy everytime he speaks and confirms more in my mind why we need a change of leadership," she said.
Admitting she wrote the letter pledging her support for Panday, Oudit explained that when she did so there were only two contenders for political leader–Panday and Ramesh Maharaj. She said of the two, Panday was the more attractive. "If I have to choose between both now, I will choose Mr Panday," she added. Oudit said when Persad-Bissessar threw her hat in the ring, she switched allegiance, endorsing her candidacy. "So that is not news. I spoke about this during the last week of December when I endorsed Kamla. This shows the incompetence of Mr Panday and his campaign team, because even if he was out of the country, his team should have informed him of this," she said.
