Police are investigating an incident where a prison officer assaulted a policeman and broke the windows of the Malabar Police Station on Wednesday night.
Police said officers were on duty at the station at 11.45 pm, when they noticed the man wearing only a pair of grey boxers banging on the station door.
The officers then saw the man kneeling on the ground and begging them to “arrest him,” as he held his hands behind his back.
As one of the officers approached him and tried to speak with him, the man attacked him, grabbing onto the policeman.
The officer broke free as the man picked up two big stones nearby and broke a window in front of the police station and a second window behind the station. Officers eventually subdued the man and arrested him.
The injured officer and the suspect were both taken to the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex, Mt Hope, where they were treated and discharged.
Investigators said the suspect is a prison officer assigned to the Ankle Monitoring Unit.
He is expected to be taken to court to answer charges of malicious damage to government property, assaulting a police officer and resisting arrest.
Police said they had no explanation for the man’s erratic behaviour. —Shane Superville
