The political leader of the Patriotic Front has added her voice to those calling for real solutions to the country's spiralling crime rate, saying a proactive approach to fighting crime is needed urgently.
A guest on today’s edition of CNC3’s The Morning Brew show, Mickela Panday says for too long, there has been a reactive approach to crime—especially murders.
She says it is time to secure this country's borders in an effort to control what she maintains is “a gun violence epidemic”.
She believes that all that is required is political will.
“I also do not believe that you need to tell citizens and pass the buck and say, ‘Well, I can’t do the job as the State with all the resources—all the human and financial resources—but you know what? Do it for yourself. You should do it because I’m incapable of doing it’. That’s ridiculous! Where there is a will there is a way,” the Patriotic Front leader asserts.
“Crime in this country benefits very important people and therefore, it has been allowed to continue,” she says. “We’ve grown up thinking it’s acceptable. It isn’t acceptable and it should not be.”
She added: “We have to say, ‘Enough is enough!’ Otherwise, this will spiral out of control in a way that … We’re already riding a tiger that we we’re practically unable to come off without having political will, gumption and bravery to fight.”
Mickela Panday says one of the most basic functions of any government is to protect its citizens, and any political party aspiring to office must be certain they can do that job, or else not bother to put themselves up for election.
