Chairman of the Dr Eric Williams Memorial Committee Reginald Vidale wants Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar to honour the father of the nation by placing his portrait in every school in T&T.

In his address at a memorial ceremony at the Scarborough Esplanade in Tobago on Saturday, Vidale said that would help preserve the legacy and message of the country’s first prime minister.

He said students must be reminded of Williams’ message on the eve of Independence in 1962.

“You must respect your parents, respect your teachers, respect your anthem, respect all that I gave to you. Respect it and continue to respect it,” he said.

“And if this country needs to go any further, I ask the young people to respect what Dr Williams had asked you on the 30th of August 1962—that was his blessing to you all.”

Vidale asked the new government to “continue giving the committee your support in keeping the memory and legacy of the father of the nation, relevant and significant to the children of the nation.”

He congratulated Persad-Bissessar on becoming “historically, the first female prime minister to be appointed on two occasions.”

He also extended best wishes to Tobago’s new MPs.
