A po­lice of­fi­cer seen in a vi­ral video on so­cial me­dia dri­ving on the wrong side of the high­way on Tues­day morn­ing is be­ing in­ter­viewed by of­fi­cers of the Pro­fes­sion­al Stan­dards Bu­reau.

Se­nior po­lice of­fi­cers say the man who was record­ed dri­ving a gold Toy­ota sedan, reg­is­tra­tion PBS 354, head­ing east along the West­bound lane of the Churchill Roo­sevelt High­way on Tues­day morn­ing has been iden­ti­fied and an in­ter­nal in­ves­ti­ga­tion has been start­ed.

Speak­ing with Guardian Me­dia, the Road Safe­ty Co­or­di­na­tor for the Trinidad and To­ba­go Po­lice Ser­vice (TTPS) Brent Bat­son, con­firmed that the mo­torist was a mem­ber of the TTPS and the mat­ter was be­ing dealt with in­ter­nal­ly.

"The of­fi­cer has been iden­ti­fied and they are do­ing some ver­i­fi­ca­tions... once all that is done the po­lice will make a pro­nounce­ment,” Bat­son said.

He said the TTPS wel­comes videos from cit­i­zens high­light­ing reck­less be­hav­iour that is con­trary to pub­lic safe­ty whether it re­gards po­lice or the gen­er­al pub­lic.

“The pub­lic was right­ful­ly shocked by what they saw which was a uni­formed of­fi­cer in his pri­vate car seem­ing to be en­gag­ing in some sort of dan­ger­ous dri­ving be­hav­iour... dri­ving counter to the flow of traf­fic,” Bat­son said.

The car driven by a police corporal heading east along the Westbound lane of the Churchill Roosevelt Highway yesterday.

An­oth­er se­nior po­lice of­fi­cial says that based on the uni­form seen in the video, the of­fi­cer may hold the rank of cor­po­ral.

So­cial me­dia users who have viewed the video ex­pressed great con­cern and are in dis­be­lief.

“Like some­thing from a movie set,” one user wrote.

An­oth­er said, “Some­thing wrong he's very cool has to be se­ri­ous men­tal is­sue needs to get check.”

Sev­er­al called for charges to be brought against the dri­ver and one said, “Law­less­ness at its high­est! No po­lice on pa­trol?”

Ar­rive Alive pres­i­dent Sharon In­gle­field de­scribed the of­fi­cer’s dri­ving as reck­less.

“I would urge any­one who is think­ing along those lines to se­ri­ous­ly con­sid­er go­ing for men­tal eval­u­a­tion be­cause un­less it's an ab­solute emer­gency there is ab­solute­ly no rea­son to be dri­ving in the op­po­site di­rec­tion on a high­way,” In­gle­field said.

She said mem­bers of the pro­tec­tive ser­vices are sup­posed to be ex­em­plars.

“All our law en­force­ment of­fi­cers whether it be po­lice of­fi­cers, fire, coast guards, all of them are sup­posed to be role mod­els, there­fore any of­fi­cer that is be­hav­ing reck­less­ly, that’s talk­ing and be­hav­ing ag­gres­sive­ly in our view, their jobs should be sus­pend­ed...you’re sup­posed to pro­tect and serve,” In­gle­field said.
