“Why they do him that for? Tell me why they do him that?” 63-year-old Radhir Seepersad cried, struggling to come to terms with the murder of her nephew Deryck Harrinath.

Harrinath, 56, a United States citizen, was supposed to pick up Seepersad for church on Sunday but never showed up. Relatives believe he was ambushed and murdered as he left his home at Krishna Garden, Dow Village, South Oropouche, that morning.

When calls to his cell phone went unanswered, relatives went to his home on Monday and found his lifeless body slumped against a wall in his garage with gunshot wounds to the chest.

Relatives are baffled about Harrinath’s murder, as nothing was taken from his home and his Mercedes Benz was still parked outside.

“No robbery. They went and kill him. I don’t know who kill him, they went and kill my child,” said Seepersad.

She said Harrinath called her around 7.50 am on Sunday to let her know he was on the way to pick her up.

His cousin Sueann Soong speculated that his killers began shooting at him as he opened the front gate because she saw blood in the yard. She believes he ran into the garage and began pelting items at them because there were shards of glass on the ground.

“We know crime real high in Trinidad; it horrible but you never think that it will actually happen to you and your family. I think these people are animals because I don’t think if you watch animals, not even the animals does be so horrible. I don’t like what happened to him because I know he did not deserve it,” Soong said.

Harrinath migrated to the United States when he was 17 years old and worked in the IT field. His estranged wife, daughter, mother, and sister all live abroad.

Seepersad said her nephew loved T&T and returned to this country about six years ago, opened a business, and built his house.

Describing him as her son, she said, “He did not care about crime; he loved Trinidad. He say if he have to get he death, he will dead Trinidad.”

Seepersad, who revealed that she had heart surgery three months ago and is a cancer survivor, said she was leaning on God for courage and justice.

“I put everything in the hands of my God because I serving a living God, and let me tell you, I will see my justice,” she said.
