Police are investigating after a retired policeman opened fire on three men he believed were bandits at his Bon Air West home early Sunday morning.
According to police, the 64-year-old man was asleep at around 2 am when he heard a noise outside and went to investigate.
From his upstairs veranda, he saw three men standing near a car parked on the street, which belonged to his daughter’s friend.
The retired officer called out to the men, but said they did not respond and instead got into the vehicle. He told police he shouted again as they began reversing.
Believing they were bandits, he fired at them with his licensed Glock 17 pistol, hitting one man in the chest and another in the stomach.
When he realised he knew the men in the car, he took the wounded suspects to the Arima Hospital, where they remained up to 7 am Sunday.
Officers of the Arouca CID are continuing enquiries.
