A Rio Claro man accused of assaulting his mother-in-law, allegedly causing her to become partially blind, has been freed after the prosecution failed to comply with the court’s directions.
Sonny was discharged on a charge of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm after appearing virtually before Master Kimitria Gray. He was represented by attorney Ramesh Deena, instructed by Christian Deena.
Sonny was charged in connection with an incident on May 16, 2023, at Legendre Road, Ecclesville, Rio Claro. It is alleged that he was drinking puncheon rum with his mother-in-law and other relatives when an argument erupted between him and his wife over pampers and milk. The disagreement reportedly escalated into a physical altercation.
When Sonny’s mother-in-law attempted to intervene and break up the fight, she was struck several times in the face and fell to the ground. Her left eye was reported to be bulging, and she was taken to hospital for treatment. She subsequently lost sight in one of her eyes.
At a sufficiency hearing on Wednesday, the prosecution informed the court that the charging officer was on vacation. The prosecutor submitted that he was unable to comply with the May 1, 2025, scheduling order, as he had not received a complete file from the charging officer, despite making several attempts to obtain it.
Notwithstanding the prosecution’s non-compliance, Master Gray noted that no application for an extension of time had been filed and subsequently discharged Sonny.
