A robbery suspect wanted in connection with a home invasion in the Mon Repos district was shot and killed by police in Ste Madeleine yesterday after he allegedly pointed a firearm at officers pursuing him during an intelligence-led anti-crime operation.
The deceased has been identified as Mikael Isaiah Lewis of Corinth Hills.
According to a release from the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS), around 3 am, officers were travelling along Hibiscus Drive, San Fernando, when two men reported that two armed assailants had attempted to rob someone but were unsuccessful.
While proceeding along Alexandra Lane, they saw a man on the lower staircase who matched the description of one of the suspects.
The release stated that when the officers called out to the man, he ran up the stairs while holding his waist. The officers pursued him, ordering him to stop.
At the top of the staircase, the man allegedly pointed a firearm in the direction of the officers and refused to comply with repeated commands to drop the weapon.
Three officers then opened fire on him. As the man fell to the ground, the firearm fell from his hand and was seized by police.
He was immediately transported in a marked police vehicle to the San Fernando General Hospital, where he died.
Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the incident are continuing.
The intelligence-led anti-crime operation was conducted under the leadership of Senior Superintendent Hospedales, Superintendent Bertie, Woman Superintendent Bridglal, Assistant Superintendents Pacheco, Ramsaran and Chulhan and Woman Assistant Superintendent Motilal.
