Less than an hour after being robbed by two men who entered their maxi taxi, a driver and passenger spotted the same bandits and alerted police as the men boarded another minibus on Monday night.

Police said the driver and passenger were travelling east along the Priority Bus Route around 10.15 pm when they picked up two men in San Juan.

One of the men rang the bell to get out at the St Augustine tunnel near the University of the West Indies (UWI). As the men exited, one of them pulled out a gun, pointed it at the driver and passenger, and ordered them to hand over their valuables.

The bandits stole two mobile phones, a pair of earrings, and a quantity of cash before escaping.

The victims drove to the Tunapuna Police Station to report the robbery but officers there directed them to make the report at the St Joseph Police Station instead.

While heading to St Joseph, the victims saw the same men getting into another maxi. They followed the vehicle and kept the suspects in sight while contacting the police.

Officers from the St Joseph and Barataria stations intercepted the maxi near Mt Lambert shortly after and arrested both suspects.

Police said they recovered a Smith and Wesson pistol with 15 rounds of ammunition, along with cash and jewellery, from the men.

The suspects were taken to the St Joseph Police Station pending further enquiries.
