Thousands of commuters using the SS Erin Road would soon have a smoother go of it, if the Works and Transport Ministry’s plans for repair works are successful.
Minister of Works and Transport, Senator Rohan Sinanan, confirmed for Guardian Media that repairs to collapsed cylinders along the major roadway at Syne Village, Siparia, should begin shortly.
Minister Sinanan said tenders would be reviewed this week, before work commences.
Some local government representatives are breathing a sigh of relief at the news.
“This roadway serves commuters travelling to and from Siparia, La Brea, Cedros, Icacos, Palo Seco, Santa Flora and several satellite communities,” Dinesh Sankersingh, Chairman of the Siparia Regional Corporation (SRC), told Guardian Media.
“If the Ministry can deliver on this promise, I would be very happy.”
Sankersingh said he, along with several councillors, had written to Minister Sinanan, seeking an urgent solution to the problems with the SS Erin Road.
The local government councillor said the roadway collapsed several months ago and heavy steel plates were placed over the roadway to allow traffic to flow.
He explained that the steel plates themselves eventually became warped in some areas, which resulted in traffic having to flow one lane at a time, because of the depth of the depression created by the warped plates.
Sankersingh warned that if the road deteriorates even more, it will create further hardships for the people in the affected communities.
