While motorists were trapped in the capital city by floodwaters yesterday, commuters hoping to have the easy way out on the water taxi found themselves waiting for hours on a sailing.
At 6 pm yesterday, three sailings had been canceled: 3.30 pm, 4.30 pm, and 5.30 pm.
With South Quay under water, the frustrated passengers had no choice but to wait and hope the service would begin running before nightfall.
About 700 passengers were told that rough seas prevented the water taxi vessels from docking.
While the rough seas persisted, two of the vessels could be seen waiting just off the port.
One passenger who asked to remain anonymous told Guardian Media he arrived in time for the 3.30 pm sailing and at 5.45 pm was told that only one vessel might be able to dock.
He said the passengers were told that the authorities were trying to get several Public Service Transport Corporation (PTSC) buses that could assist in taking the passengers to San Fernando.
Contacted yesterday evening, Works and Transport Minister Rohan Sinanan confirmed that rough seas had caused the sailings to be cancelled and delayed.
He said two vessels were on standby for when the sea conditions normalized to dock and load passengers.
