In­ves­ti­ga­tions are con­tin­u­ing as to why a se­cu­ri­ty of­fi­cer was forced to shoot at a ve­hi­cle.

The of­fi­cer, who ac­cord­ing to po­lice is em­ployed by Sygate Se­cu­ri­ty Agency Lim­it­ed of Curepe and is post­ed at Can­tonese Su­per­store, East­ern Main Road, Ma­tu­ri­ta.

Po­lice have since seized his firearm a Glock 19 Pis­tol and 24 rounds of 9 mm am­mu­ni­tion, two mag­a­zines and one spent shell cas­ing.

The po­lice re­port stat­ed that at about 10:15 am on Mon­day, the Es­tate In­spec­tor was on du­ty at Can­tonese Su­per­store when he saw the own­er of the su­per­mar­ket hav­ing a con­ver­sa­tion with a man an al­leged shoplifter. 

A short while af­ter the own­er ges­tured in the di­rec­tion of the of­fi­cer for his as­sis­tance. Whilst ap­proach­ing the own­er, the al­leged shoplifter ran away and en­tered a white AD Wag­on, reg­is­tra­tion num­ber un­con­firmed but giv­en as PDA 2914 and at­tempt­ed to dri­ve off in the path­way of the of­fi­cer. 

Po­lice said the of­fi­cer al­leged that he shout­ed for the dri­ver of the ve­hi­cle to stop. How­ev­er, when he failed to do so, he be­came fear­ful for his life and drew his hol­stered firearm, went in­to a crouched po­si­tion and dis­charged one round of 9 mm am­mu­ni­tion in the di­rec­tion of the ve­hi­cle hit­ting the left front tyre. The dri­ver, how­ev­er, did not stop but con­tin­ued west along the East­ern Main Road to­wards Or­ange Flats. 

The Pin­to Po­lice Post was con­tact­ed and the of­fi­cers re­spond­ed and made checks to lo­cate the ve­hi­cle, how­ev­er, it proved fu­tile.

The scene was vis­it­ed by Cpl Vi­tal­is who made cer­tain ob­ser­va­tions and seized the firearm in­volved in the in­ci­dent. 

State­ments were record­ed from the of­fi­cer, the Su­per­store’s own­er and one oth­er wit­ness.

A re­quest to the CCTV re­trieval unit is ex­pect­ed to be made.
