A wall inside First Citizens Bank in Siparia was damaged after a security officer’s firearm accidentally discharged on Monday.
The incident took place around 4.25 pm on the bank’s upper floor, in the men’s washroom. According to a police report, the 42-year-old estate constable had placed his firearm on the counter to use the washroom. As he picked it back up, the weapon discharged, striking a wall.
No one was injured. The officer reported the incident to his supervisor, closed the bank at 6.20 pm, and later went to the police station.
Police photographed the firearm, ammunition, spent shell, and the officer’s Firearm User’s Licence. Officers were expected to visit the bank yesterday as investigations continue.
