Several people enjoying a relaxing afternoon at Palmiste Park, San Fernando on Easter Monday were forced to seek medical attention after they were attacked by a swarm of bees.

For the safety of children and adults, a nearby car show and mini petting zoo event hosted by the Rapidfire Kidz Foundation and Team Fast Parts was shut down. Families and friends were picnicking and engaged in fun activities, including a birthday lime, when around 4.15 pm, people began running and screaming as a swarm of bees suddenly attacked.

Jeffery Ramroop who was about to sell his kites was stung all over his body by what he believed to be thousands of bees. He was seen running and gesticulating with his hands as he tried to get the bees off of him. Lenny Mahepat who was at the park with his family got stung as he went to render assistance.

“We heard a lot of screaming coming from down the hill. People was running. It had a lady covered in bees. I take a sheet and covered she down and I start spraying fly spray because we brought food here. There was a guy across on the other side covered in bees also,” he recalled.

Emergency responders arrived at the scene with two ambulances and at least seven people were taken to the San Fernando General Hospital. Rapidfire Kidz Foundation president Kevin Ratiram apologised to the patrons for having to shut down the event, but he said it was necessary as he did not want to put anyone else in jeopardy.

Before the fracas which brought the event to an early end, the Reptiles Conservation Centre of T&T brought several animals including snakes, lizards, spiders and caimans that kept the children entertained. There were also ponies, horses, bunnies and dogs. The children were also excited by the fast cars, other vehicles and motorbikes which were on display.
