Examinations had to be delayed at the University of T&T on Wednesday morning after gunshots ricocheted outside the campus at Tarouba during a police manhunt for three suspected robbers.
The suspects were flushed out of the tall bushes near the campus around 9 am, as the students prepared to sit the end of term examinations.
Police said the two men and a woman were being tracked after they robbed a Penal family.
They escaped in a black Ford Ranger but following a tip-off, and All Points Bulletin was despatched for officers to be on the lookout for the van.
Police from the Southern Divisional Task Force and the CID led by Senior Supt Zamsheed Mohammed gave chase.
The suspects abandoned the van near Ste Clements and took to the bushes near the Brian Lara stadium.
Under the cover of night, the two men and a woman managed to cross the road and took cover.
Police set up a net in the vicinity and all patrol vehicles were dispatched to be on the lookout.
By daybreak, the suspects were still in hiding and police began moving into the bushes to flush them out.
A source at UTT said students were preparing to sit the structures and modelling exams when three gunshots were heard outside the campus.
"The chief invigilator had to compose the staff and students. They were running about the main building.
The exams were delayed in over 30 minutes because students were traumatised.
About 3 shots went off.
The police were on the scene quickly.
This was about 9 am and it was madness in the school," the source said.
The trio was later taken to the Mon Repos Police Station where they were interrogated separately.
They are expected to appear on a series of ID parades for robberies in South, and Central Trinidad.
