Coast Guard officers on Thursday morning arrested six Venezuelan nationals who were caught attempting to smuggle over half a million dollars in marijuana into the country.The six were held during an exercise between 11.30 pm on Wednesday night to 2.30 am Thursday morning, in the North Coast near Grand Riviere.
The men were held aboard a fishing boat named Mora. A total of 67 packets of marijuana weighing 58.2 kilogrammes, which police said had an estimated street value of $870,300 was seized.The men also had 50 shotgun cartridges. They were taken to Staubles Bay, Chaguaramas and handed over to members of the Organised Crime, Narcotics and Firearms Bureau and Immigration officers.
In an unrelated exercise yesterday, members of the North Eastern Division Task Force led by Cpl Sunil Bharath held a 28-year-old Morvant man with a 9 mm pistol and ten rounds of ammunition. Police said they saw the suspect, a security guard, of Pelican Extension Morvant, was held at Mahabir Court, Morvant with the illegal gun. A search at his home yielded two bullet proof vests and a camouflage jacket. Later that day, the same officers held a 30-year-old-man with an undisclosed quantity of cocaine and marijuana at Don Miguel Road, San Juan.
