Controversial social media personality Gabriel “Batman” Harrigin has been remanded to prison after being denied bail when he appeared in court charged with kidnapping and rape.
Harrigin, who has gained notoriety for his viral exploits locally and abroad, made his first appearance before High Court Master Indira Chinebas yesterday morning. Bail was refused at that hearing.
Master Chinebas is expected to reconsider bail when Harrigin, who is represented by attorney Larry Williams, reappears in court on March 20.
According to court allegations, the incident occurred in January, two days after Harrigin celebrated his 32nd birthday.
The complainant told investigators that Harrigin picked her up at her home in D’Abadie and that they went to a bar along Ariapita Avenue, Woodbrook. She alleged that after they left the establishment, she believed he was taking her home but instead drove to his residence in St James.
The woman claimed that when she attempted to leave, Harrigin slapped and cuffed her before dragging her inside the house. She further alleged that he threatened to “kill and bury” her and forced her to have unprotected sexual intercourse on two occasions.
She later reported the matter to officers at the Besson Street Police Station after being dropped off in Port-of-Spain, police said.
Harrigin was arrested by investigators last week after he was reportedly deported from Guyana. He was subsequently charged after allegedly being identified in an identification parade.
He is facing charges of kidnapping, false imprisonment, grievous sexual assault, two counts of rape and assault by beating.
