Two Trinidad and To­ba­go Reg­i­ment (TTR) sol­diers res­cued five civil­ians who got in­to dif­fi­cul­ty in the wa­ters off Blan­chisseuse Beach on Sat­ur­day, ac­cord­ing to a Face­book post by the Trinidad and To­ba­go Reg­i­ment.

The Reg­i­ment said that around 4 pm, sol­diers from the First In­fantry Bat­tal­ion were con­duct­ing a rou­tine pa­trol near the Blan­chisseuse Com­mu­ni­ty Cen­tre when they no­ticed two chil­dren and an adult man strug­gling in the wa­ter.

Recog­nis­ing that the three were in dis­tress, the sergeant on pa­trol sought as­sis­tance from the op­er­a­tor of a near­by re­sort and ob­tained a life ring.

The sergeant re­mained on the shore­line, se­cur­ing and man­ag­ing the res­cue rope, while a lance cor­po­ral, who was the pa­trol medic, en­tered the wa­ter and moved to­wards the fam­i­ly.

The lance cor­po­ral reached the three peo­ple with the life ring, while the sergeant helped pull them to­wards shore.

As the res­cue was un­der­way, an­oth­er man and woman en­tered the wa­ter to as­sist but al­so got in­to dif­fi­cul­ty.

The sol­diers re­spond­ed and helped both in­di­vid­u­als safe­ly back to shore.

The Reg­i­ment said the lance cor­po­ral then as­sessed all five peo­ple and found them to be in good health, with no im­me­di­ate med­ical con­cerns.

Ac­cord­ing to the Face­book post, the ac­tions of the two sol­diers demon­strat­ed the alert­ness, ini­tia­tive and sense of du­ty ex­pect­ed of Reg­i­ment mem­bers.

The Reg­i­ment al­so urged mem­bers of the pub­lic to ex­er­cise cau­tion when en­ter­ing the sea, re­main mind­ful of pre­vail­ing wa­ter con­di­tions and, where pos­si­ble, seek ap­pro­pri­ate as­sis­tance rather than putting them­selves at fur­ther risk when at­tempt­ing a res­cue.
