A St Joseph man was killed on Monday in what police are describing as a revenge attack following a day of gun-fuelled exchanges.
The deceased was identified as Kerwyn “Bellyez” Sammerson, 42, of Upper Wharf Trace, Maracas, St Joseph.
Also injured in the shooting was a 38-year-old woman from the same address. Both were shot around 2.30 pm while sitting on the road talking.
Officers from the St Joseph CID received a report of the shooting and learned that both victims had been taken to the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex, Mount Hope, by family members. Sammerson was pronounced dead at 4.10 pm, while the woman, who sustained a gunshot wound to the buttocks, was treated and warded in stable condition.
Officers attached to the Special Evidence Recovery Unit (SERU) recovered five 9mm spent shell casings at the scene.
Police said the shooting appears to be linked to an earlier altercation between Sammerson and the suspect around 10.30 am the same day, in which both sustained chop wounds inflicted on each other. It is alleged that Sammerson later went to the suspect’s home and fired several shots, though no one was injured during that incident.
The fatal shooting is believed to have been a reprisal for the earlier confrontation.
