Commissioner of Police Gary Griffith is certain that the Police Service is in better shape one year after he was installed as top cop.
“The verdict is definitely out, what I can say is that we have a much better Trinidad and Tobago Police Service. We have a situation where we build a foundation and that foundation is to ensure that we can move forward,” said Griffith.
During a press conference at the Police Administrative Building on Edward Street, the Commissioner detailed many plans and strategies he had implemented in the past year to improve to TTPS.
Following Griffith’s summary, Public Information Officer Supt Wayne Mystar presented survey conducted online and via telephone by the TTPS.
It’s findings suggested that public perception of the Police Service is on the up and public approval of the Police Commissioner is even higher.
SURVEY STATISTICS:
According to the online survey conducted by the TTPS: 59 per cent rated the TTPS as good or above. The average satisfaction score was 4.9 out of 10. Women expressed more satisfaction with the TTPS than Men according to the survey.
The online survey stated 36 per cent had confidence in the TTPS in 2018 while 55 per cent have confidence in TTPS in 2019 (scores of 5 or more out of 10)
As for the commissioner, 49 per cent had confidence in the CoP in 2018 while 76 per cent have confidence in the CoP in 2019 (scores of 5 or more out of 10)
36 per cent of those polled online were not satisfied with the service received from TTPS.
The survey, however, stated that women generally felt safer than men, however, less than a third of all respondents felt safe on community streets at night.
The survey stated that most praised officers for their respectful conduct while on duty while their lowest ratings were received for controlling violent crime.
The TTPS phone survey was even more favourable.
According to the phone survey 65 per cent of respondents rated the current CoP as excellent or very good while 79 per cent approve or greatly approve of the performance of Gary Griffith.
The telephone survey statistics stated that 95 per cent support the current initiatives of the TTPS
Only 14 per cent said they had no confidence in the TTPS. (Most were somewhat confident and 35 per cent were confident or very confident)
14 per cent were not satisfied with the current direction of the TTPS
66 per cent were somewhat satisfied, satisfied or very satisfied with the performance of the TTPS in their neighbourhood.
