Two elderly women were killed and 27 other passengers were injured this morning when a water truck collided with a PTSC bus on the Uriah Butler Highway in Charlieville.
The dead women have been identified as 66-year-old Tara Baboolal of Debe and 61-year-old Judy Clark of Diego Martin. Fifteen of the 27 injured passengers of the bus are in a serious condition.
Baboolal was decapitated in the crash while police say a piece of metal pierced Clarke's chest. Both drivers escaped with minor injuries. All injured were taken to the hospital.
Around 9.45 am a dump truck was proceeding south along the highway when one of its tyres blew out causing it to collide with a delivery truck travelling in the same direction.
Police said the driver of the delivery truck lost control of the vehicle which crossed the median and collided with the bus travelling north along the highway near the Munroe Road flyover.
Superintendent Wayne Mystar, of the Central Division, who supervised operations on the scene, assured that traffic will return to normal soon.
He has also instructed that the blood alcohol level of all drivers involved be checked at the hospital.
