Accident survivor Yousuf Hosein is once again making an appeal to Government to install protective barriers, after another fatal cross-median crash over the weekend.
Hosein, who survived a similar accident in 2012, is calling on Minister of Works and Infrastructure Jearlean John and Minister of Transport Eli Zakour to continue the installation of guard rails on highways to prevent the loss of lives and limbs on the nation’s highways.
Hosein’s appeal comes after Laventille resident Michael King died on Sunday afternoon, after a pick-up slammed into him while he was driving along the Uriah Butler Highway in Chaguanas.
Police said King, of Furness Whitty, Private Road, Success Village, Laventille, was heading north along the highway around 5.30 pm when a black Mitsubishi Sportero, which was heading south, crossed the median and slammed into the Kia Cerato he was driving.
Front seat passenger Severina Francois was also injured and was taken to the Eric Williams Medical Sciences, Mt Hope, where she was treated for brain injuries.
The driver of the Sportero was taken to the Chaguanas Health Facility, along with his passenger, where they were treated and later discharged.
In an emailed response to Guardian Media yesterday, the Ministry of Works and Infrastructure said currently, a guardrail project for the median in Gasparillo is being undertaken, with the remaining 200 metres of guard railing scheduled to be completed by Thursday.
The $200,000 project is being done by Unisure Limited.
“The Ministry and Works and Infrastructure takes this opportunity to urge all road users to exercise caution when using the nation’s roadways,” the Ministry added.
In an unrelated incident, a 41-year-old Curepe man slammed into the back of a car after suffering a heart attack while driving on Sunday night.
Police reported that Randy Siew, of Alice Street, Curepe, was pronounced dead at the scene by the District Medical Officer.
Police said around 8.15 pm, Siew was heading north along the Uriah Butler Highway in his Suzuki Grand Vitara, near Caroni, when he suffered a myocardial infarction and slammed into the back of a Nissan Sylphy driven by Himlal Samdeo, 40, of Claxton Bay.
Siew, who had two elderly passengers in his vehicle, veered off the road after the accident.
Both passengers, ages 65 and 70, sustained injuries and were taken to the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex, while Samdeo did not report any injuries.
