Two police officers and a civilian sustained injuries in a two-vehicle collision along the Uriah Butler Highway near Freeport on Wednesday morning.

Initial reports indicate that around 3:05 a.m., a police constable was driving a marked police vehicle south along the highway in the left lane, accompanied by a female officer.

Approximately 100 metres before the John Peter Walkover, they heard a loud noise and felt an impact. The police vehicle spun and came to a stop facing northeast on the extreme right lane. They then saw the driver of a blue Mazda 3, which had ended up in a ditch on the eastern side of the highway, staggering as he exited the vehicle.

The back of the police vehicle—including the tailgate, spare tyre, rear fenders, and left rear rim and tyre—was damaged, while the front of the Mazda sustained significant damage.

The male officer suffered injuries to his head, neck, and back. The female officer reported injuries to her neck, head, right shoulder, and right hand.

The Mazda driver failed a breathalyser test with a reading of 55 mg. Officers took him to the Chaguanas Health Facility for treatment, while emergency personnel conveyed the injured officers to the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex.

Chaguanas police are continuing investigations.
