The Office of Disaster Preparedness and Management has issued an upgraded Red Level alert as major rivers across the country have overspilled their banks and more rain is expected.
There have been widespread flooding across several parts of the country and main roadways are impassible.
Motorists are warned not to drive through flood water and seek shelter until the water subsides.
The Chaguanas Borough Corporation has closed the Marchin Bridge which has been deemed unsafe.
Be on the alert for rising river levels and possible over-spill. Do not take unnecessary risks.
There is a very high potential for major damage to property and infrastructure and for multiple lives to be lost. It is advised to stay indoors until the all clear is given by government officials, the ODPM advised.

Flight delays, Galleons Passage return journey cancelled
Caribbean Airlines has announced that due to the adverse weather conditions currently affecting Trinidad and Tobago, four flights have been delayed between one to three hours.
The airline says some flight between Trinidad and Tobago have also been delayed, or consolidated.
Passengers are advised that these services are delayed and not cancelled. No international services have been cancelled, the airline said.
The affected flights are
BW 434 Port of Spain to St. Lucia
BW 435 St. Lucia to Port of Spain
BW 448 Port of Spain to Barbados
BW 449 Barbados to Port of Spain
BW 550 Port of Spain to JFK, New York
And the Port Authority announced that the return sailing of the Galleons Passage from Scarborough, Tobago had been cancelled in the interest of safety. The vessel encountered a mechanical problem en route to Tobago and had to stop for 15 minutes.
In a statement, Nidco said passengers who were confirmed for the 4 pm sailing will now be accommodated on the T&T Spirit 7.30 am sailing on Saturday.
