Venezuelan national Evelyn Rojas was shot dead yesterday morning following a night of partying at an apartment she shared with a close male relative in Carapichaima. Police are searching for her male companion and other Venezuelans who were at the party to assist them in their investigations.
Rojas, 40, a mother of three, moved into the apartment at Waterloo Road, Carapichaima, less than a month ago. Landlord Jeffrey Dyett discovered her lying in a pool of blood under a shed outside the apartment shortly after 3 am.
At the murder scene yesterday, Dyett pointed to a box of empty alcohol beverages and a music player.
“They were partying. Venezuelans love to party,” he said.
He believes that Rojas was shot at the back of the house and ran to the side where she died.
He recalled: “When I came down here, I saw two men walking out. I saw the woman lying down on the ground. I didn’t hear anything. I would defend my place and once you living here I will defend you. No man could come here and play he lashing you.
“I was around but I was sleeping. If it was up it would have been a different story.”
Dyett said the victim’s ex-lover recently found out where she was living.
“When the man came he started to cry. He said, ‘She left me and gone’.”
He said on Friday he spoke to Rojas about her relationships.
“I didn’t know I was talking to her about her death,” he said.
Dyett said Rojas, whom he described as a good woman, was unemployed had been in T&T for about two years and spoke English.
A neighbour said there were about eight or nine people at the apartment.
“They were playing a lot of music and talking and laughing. They were liming and cooking and playing Spanish music. Every day they play music in the evening,” he said.
Freeport police are investigating.
